Ray Ban Publicity Stunt Hits the Headlines

March 2nd, 2010

A clip from YouTube that we’ve already featured on our blog has been making waves not just online but in the press – it features a guy called Matthew having a pair of famous Rayban sunglasses tattooed to his face as his girlfriend watches on wearing an actual pair of the iconic shades.
According to the Daily Mail, the viral video may have been seen by half a million or more, but it could all be a prank. The man ‘making a spectacle of himself’ could in fact be a fake. The clip certainly looks real enough as we watch the tattooist at work with redness and some bleeding around the edges of the tattoo. But apparently the video was just part of a growing portfolio of viral video clips the publicity people at Ray-Ban are becoming somewhat expert at. Marketing pros have congratulated the brand for keeping their pulse on what’s cool with the viral hit. Although some may wonder why the label needs to keep its fingers on the pulse of what’s cool – Rayban is such an iconic, timeless brand it’ll never go out of fashion!

Could RayBan be leading the way for the first 3-D fashion glasses?

March 2nd, 2010

Could Rayban be leading the way for the first 3-D fashion glasses?

Everyone’s talking about how the future of film is 3D. Thanks to blockbuster hits like Avatar 3-D is big. And it seems the fashion world is now catching up with the trend. It’s been dubbed as a moment in fashion history as the world awaits the first fashion shows that are now being streamed in 3-D, offering a whole new way to experience the latest fashions and be more a part of the moment.
But will those watching the fashion shows in 3-D look fashionable in their 3-D glasses? For decades, fashion lovers and actors have been wearing their shades at night time or indoors just because a pair of Raybans looks so cool (and with prescription Rayban sunglasses available, there’s no excuse not to wear them 24-7!) The biggest names in fashion like Anna Wintour are never seen without their shades, so much so there are rumours that Anna’s sunglasses may be surgically attached!
And now 3-D technology is giving all of us an excuse to wear dark glasses in the dark! It’s been predicted that up to 30 million people will own 3-D box sets by 2012. But what if you need prescription designer glasses? The trend will certainly throw the gauntlet down to the designer sunglasses manufacturers looking for ways to combine cool frames, 3-D lenses and prescription lenses.
Currently 3-D glasses look a little like throwbacks to the old NHS frames. But no doubt all that will change if 3-D really does become cool - you can bet brands like Rayban will have something to say about it. After all, teenage girls and boys don’t want to look like geeks if they’re going on a movie date!

Excellent Service - Painless & Superb

May 24th, 2009

Hi Specsuperstore,

Just wanted to send you an email thanking you for your excellent service. The ordering process was painless, although I had to put the order through by telephoning as my right eye CYL was too high for the web site order form. Delivery was also as advised, and I appreciated the call to see if they had arrived ok.

The glasses are also superb. The 1.67 index lenses look great. Now I need to choose some dark glasses!

Once again, thanks

Jez

Cheap Glasses to save the developing world.

March 4th, 2009

An Oxford University Physics professor has designed adjustable glasses that can be used by people in the developing world that can accomodate their prescription needs without having to have individual prescription lenses fitted into their frames.

In the developing world times are hard and we at SpecSuperstore back the Vision Aid Overseas team 100% for their outstanding work that they achieve in Developing countries. Our own optical practices have donated 1000s of pairs of glasses to Vision Aid Overseas and also testing room equipment for the charity.

However Professor Joshua Silver has now developed an adjustable spectacle. It has taken him 20 years to come up with this design which can be made on a large scale very cheaply. This is exteremely good news for people with poor eyesight in developing countries.

The spectacles are adjusted by injecting different quantities of fluid via syringes into the tough plastic lenses. This enables the prescription to be catered for long and short sighted people by altering the distribution of fluid into the lenses.

The Professor is now keen to launch a project of distributing one million pairs within India which will transform the lives of their population.

Good, outstanding work and we hope it is hugely successful.

Ordering Glasses Online FAQs

February 16th, 2009

Ordering

Q. What do I need to order glasses from Specsuperstore?

A. All you need is an up to date prescription that is no less than two years old or one year old for people over 70 or who suffer from Diabetes, Glaucoma or have a relative with Glaucoma.

Q. Where do I get my Prescription From?

A. You should have a copy of your prescription from when you last had your eyes tested. Opticians are required by law to give you a copy. If you are not in receipt of a copy of your prescription then contact your Optician where you last had your eyes tested for one. If you’re prescription is over the recommended time limits then go to any Optician for an up to date eye test.

Q. What if I can’t make out the numbers on my prescription?

A. Then you need glasses! No, simply fax the copy to us where we will do our best to help you with it.

Q. Where to I obtain an order form on your website?

A. The different order forms are available to download on the right hand side of the page in the ordering page or click here.

Your Prescription

Q. Which option do I choose? Distance, Reading or Intermediate?

A. Please choose reading for close / reading tasks, Intermediate for VDU / Music /Arms length and distance for everything else. If your prescription has different values in the distance area than the reading area then enter the details for your chosen lens choice as it appears on the prescription. If you just have one value in the reading area when your distance box has fields entered for CYL and AXIS then please put this value in the ADD box on the website.

Q. Can I use my Contact Lens prescription to order specs?

A. No, they may appear similar but your Contact Lens prescription is different to your spectacle prescription and glasses made to this prescription would be incorrect.

Q. What is my PD measurement and how can I get it?

A. Your PD (Pupillary Distance) is the distance between the centres of your pupils, which when aligned with the optical centres of prescription lenses allows the lenses to perform to their optimum. Your Optician will be reluctant to give you this measurement in order for you to buy your specs from them and not go to SpecSuperstore where you can save up to 80% on your new glasses! They may even charge you a small fee for measuring your PD. But just imagine how much you will save when you buy your specs from SpecSuperstore! Alternatively, see our guide on How to Measure you PD on the site and print off a SpecSuperstore PD ruler and measure your own PD. Its easy! If you don’t want to measure your own and don’t have your measurement from your Optician then we will set your PD to 63mm for men and 60mm for ladies where these measurements are the National Average. If you have a high Prescription please contact us for advice before ordering.

Q. What is the maximum Prescription you can make?

A. We can offer a maximum prescription of a + or- 8 sphere (SPH) and + or – 4 cylinder (CYL). For Near (ADD) Values for Bifocals and Varifocals we cannot supply values less than +0.75 or more than +3.50 Diopters.

A. The majority of our frames are made from either Nickel based metals or Plastic. However, we also offer Titanium frames which are allergy free and some designer ranges are made in Titanium or Stainless Steel. We do not sell Cellulose Nitrate or Celluloid materials. Nose pads are either plastic or silicone.

Q. What are your lenses made from?

The difference between them being the Wide and Superwide which have substantially wider Middle and Near focusing areas for when viewing a PC/Music or Reading. All the Varifocals can be made in thinner materials and in Transitions material also. The Pupillary Distance (PD) measurement is very important when ordering Varifocals. Please see our section on Ordering Varifocals in the Guide to buying your glasses page.

Q. Are Transitions available in every lens option?

A. Mostly. Transitions are excellent for all year round usage and protect the eyes from harmful UV rays from the sun. We supply Transitions V which are the quickest reacting photochromic lens on the market today. A. Yes. To do this do not enter any prescription in the prescription boxes when ordering your lenses. You may not need a prescription but just fancy a gorgeous pair of designer glasses to enhance your look!

Q. Can I try the frames at home before I order them on the website?

A. Certainly. Simply select the try at home button on the website and we will send you up to a maximum of three frames for you to try at home before you buy online. We will enclose a sticker with our address on so that you can send them back in the same packaging.
