Prada is producing a limited 500 pairs of their baroque-style sunglasses from the spring 2011 collection.
To advertise these cartoon-like specs, Prada has enlisted the help of fashion illustrators.

The “Minimal-Baroque” capsule collection will hit stores in February at limited Prada boutiques and select department stores!

Chanel have launched an innovated new  designer sunglass this season, the CH5202Q . The sunglasses have been designed to house a cleverly hidden mirror underneath the exquisitely stitched leather cover, using the same design as their beautiful handbags.

The CH5202Q comes in four colours, Black, Dark Havana, White and Violet all with UV protected sunglass lenses.

Last nights BBC detective drama saw the main character ‘Zen’ wearing the highly stylish Persol Sunglasses model PO2832s. Many people feel pressurised into buying their glasses from the store which performed their eye test. But just as getting a medical prescription from your GP does not mean you are legally bound to using the in-house pharmacy, so getting an optical prescription does not mean you have to buy the glasses from their store (though naturally they would rather you did – especially if you’re in the market for a pair of upmarket Jaeger prescription glasses with Titanium frames).

It can be uncomfortable paying for just the eye test, and walking off with a very reluctantly handed-over prescription form. However, it’s your legal right. An eye test is costed separately from the glasses for that reason. Even if you’re entitled to free eye tests, you still have the right to walk away with just the prescription.

There is a way round this, however – and that’s to book an eye test at home. People are under the mistaken belief that this is a service only available to the elderly and infirm. But anybody can apply for a home eye test, whether they have to pay for their prescriptions or not. In addition, the number of registered, freelance optometrists is rising. While some work in collaboration with NHS trusts and opticians, a growing number work privately, or combine the two.

The report checked the quality of 14 pairs of glasses at seven popular stores, including Poundland, Primark, Sight Station and Marks & Spencer. Flaws were found in around 50% of them. Worryingly, the most serious defects were in the stronger prescriptions – and not always those bought from the cheapest stores.

A pair of M&S glasses had an invisible fault which could lead to the lens falling out. Which? found this alarming, given many people buying off-the-peg glasses do so for active jobs, such as roofing or decorating, and it was a name most of them would trust. In cheaper stores, the results were even more alarming. A common fault was lens centres at different heights, or with an over-large gap between them. This was found in Tiger, Sight Station and Poundland spectacles – with one pair from Poundland having the wrong prescription altogether!

The faults could lead to serious health problems, such as unnatural head tilting, or unnatural adaptation of the eye muscles. Compensation for this could cause more problems if the wearer then bought correctly-prescribed spectacles. The Which? optometrist said most higher prescription glasses were unsuitable for active lifestyles, with some being downright dangerous if, for example, you were working up a ladder.

If you want to save money, have an eye test (this can be done by a qualified home optician) and then use it to order online prescription glasses. Carrera, Bench, Pierre Cardin and many other designer names can be found online at low cost.

Danny Baker – who also wears prescription glasses – made an online apology to listeners for not covering his regular Radio 5 Live program. With typically upbeat humour, the broadcaster – who also writes scripts for Chris Evans – said he’d been watching Tommy Steele box sets since getting his “pretty mouldy diagnosis” a month ago. He is due to start radiotherapy in January, but is confident the docs can beat the disease. He told his listeners to keep laughing at the guest presenters till he got back.

The photograph, which shows Gazza wearing dark Gucci designer sunglasses, is one that’s used a lot in the media, but 53-year old Danny tends to keep himself out of the public eye a lot more these days. Recently,Yoko Ono donated her favourite Carrera designer sunglasses to an online auction for the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal. Part of the Clothes Throw charity event, the auction ran until October 10th, raising thousands of pounds for sick children in the process.

Yoko is an honorary patron of the Imagine Appeal, which raises funds to help Liverpool’s Alder Hey hospital with its pioneering work into diseases affecting children and young people in the UK. The money goes towards essential research and equipment. Around 250,000 children each year are helped by Alder Hey, Europe’s largest and busiest children’s hospital.

Yoko signed the glasses before they were auctioned, in the hope they would raise more money. Even though they held special significance for her, she saw the auction as an important initiative. The Carrera designer sunglasses she chose were the same ones she wore on a 1980s cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and were a favourite of her husband, the late, great John Lennon – so they were certainly of personal value.

Yoko wasn’t the only star to donate sun specs. Madonna also made a contribution; a pair of her D&G designer sunglasses. But since they were from her own MDG collection, which she designed in collaboration with the fashion firm, her sacrifice was perhaps not quite so acute as Yoko’s. More contributions came from Joan Collins, Dannii Minogue, Dame Shirley Bassey and Dame Judi Dench, among others.

Bruno entered the optical profession 45 years ago, initially working for ophthalmic lens manufacturer Essilor. Bruno was a part-time rock guitarist, using sunglasses as part of his stage image, so when he heard designer frame-maker De Rigo were hiring sales people, he took an obvious career move.

Before long, Palmegiani was in charge of creative design, his rock career having bought a back-stage pass. Then, as now, Italians dominated the world of designer sunglasses – think Prada, Gucci, D & G, Bvlgari and Armani. Yet Palmegiani noticed the market was dominated by fads and crazes. This was the early 1980s, and no sooner was one look or brand “in,” than it was superseded by another model.

He decided to change all this, training as an optometrist and opening his own store in Rome. Using his showbiz flair, knowledge of eye science and fashion industry links, he set out to create a style and brand that would stand the test of time, using existing Ray-Ban and Persol sunglasses as a starting point. Italy had a craze for All Things American at the time, and the fact that Ray-Ban had give NYPD cops some redundant wayfarer Ray-Ban sunglasses made Bruno’s new brand name easy: Police.

Since then, Palmegiani has achieved phenomenal success. His Police prescription glasses sell as well as his sunglasses, trusted by optical professionals and the public alike. Among the many celebrities who wear Police sunglasses on stage is rock legend Lenny Kravitz – which for Bruno must be the ultimate accolade.
