Founded by Sotirio Boulgaris in the late 1870s Bvlgari began by selling silver belts, buckles, bracelets, buttons, tableware and antiques in Rome after a short lived partnership. Sotirio had fled the violence banditry endemic in mainland Greece to start the beginning of what was to be the Bvlgari empire which is a major player in the luxury goods market offering distinctive quality and exclusitivity on their ranges.
After romanising the company name to Bulgari in the late 1880s he had successful outlets in St.Mortiz, San Remo, Naples, Bellagio and Sorrento. Around the turn of the century the successful chain of outlets were sold in order that Sotirio could concentrate on a single jewelry and silver business and 1905 saw him purchase a shop at number 10 Via Condotti in Rome which was to remain the headquarters of Bvlgari for the duration of the 20th century. Concentrating on a more upscale selection of embossed and engraved silver his new range was often fitted with gemstones and his range took on a more cosmopolitan air.
When Sotirio died in 1932 his sons Giorgio and Costantino had reign of the business and revamped the store in Via Condotti and rebranded the name to an application of the roman alphabet BVLGARI. The rebranding cost millions and the store featured the pink and beige marble that was to set the worldwide hallmark of the chain's retail outlets. The marble featured store was to be the backdrop of many paparazzi photos featuring celebrities that were drawn to the store in the post war era.
Giorgio's three sons were to take the helm in the late 1960s and the 1970s saw the introduction of timepieces to the Bvlgari collection with watches that featured a black face encircled by a gold band and was to be the company's most popular and best selling watch. At the end of the decade the company's sales were at $50 million dollars.
By the end of 1996 Bvlgari had diversified into perfumes with their BVLGARI pour Femme and Homme and these lines contributed to 14% of annual sales and generating an estimated $40 million. 1996 also saw the launch of Bvlgari silk scarves and neckties along with their new eyewear collection licensed to Luxottica for the distribution of Bvlgari ophthalmic eyewear and sunglasses.
Bvlgari sunglasses offer the ultimate in individuality, style and quality from a designer branded sunglass manufacturer that has been massively popular since their launch in 1996. With unique gems and styling their sunglasses collection is at the high end of the apparel industry.
