Carrera was created in 1956 by Wilhelm Anger taking his inspiration from the Carrera Pan Americana car races in the 1950s. 1964 saw Carrera patenting a special thermoplastic material called Optyl which is a 20% lower weight than other optical frame materials used and affords permanent elasticity and dimension stability. This material is still used in some of their designer glasses today.

Over the next few years Carrera continued developing its range and in the 1970�s Carrera entered the vast world of Ski Products and launched its first goggles and helmets collection. Continued success for the brand saw the company open its headquarters in Traun, Austria in 1977 and the appointment of the companies first CEO Albrecht Rosenauer.

After development for three solid years the company released a new line of highly unique and revolutionary sunglasses called the Carrera Porsche Design Collection designed by Ferdinand Alexander which proved extremely popular.
