Chanel - The History

Mention the name Chanel and what springs to most peoples minds? Yes it’s the world famous perfume that every woman on the planet desires, Chanel No5. But of course Chanel produces a wide range of designer goods and has been a huge influence in the world of designer goods for many years.
Chanel originated in 1909 when Gabrielle Chanel opened a new shop in the Balsan district of Paris, little did she know at the time that this was the start of one of the Worlds greatest names in fashion. The Balsan shop quickly became the meeting place for French Gentlemen who would often bring their mistresses and wives along and purchase fancy decorated hats from Gabrielle Chanel for them. During these early years Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel began a relationship with a wealthy French Gentleman called Arthur Capel who quickly spotted that Coco had a strong business sense and helped her to acquire a new property in Paris.
Over the next few years, including the years of the First World War, Coco continued to produce fashionable and desirable yet simple designs despite having to overcome many problems including financial problems. In 1921 Coco released her first perfume onto the Market and named it after her own lucky number, No 5. The perfume was received well by the public and quickly became a huge success.
During World War II Coco went into retirement and moved into the famous Ritz Hotel in Paris with a Nazi officer, Hans Gunther Von Dincklage. Her boutiques remained open during this time but only sold her Chanel Perfumes and range of accessories. When France eventually fell into occupation under the might of the invading German forces the Ritz hotel quickly became the French headquarters for the Nazi’s. During this period it has been rumoured that Coco was secretly sent to meet Winston Churchill on a peace mission. When France was liberated she was quickly arrested and charged with collaboration with the German Nazi’s. As a result of her previous meetings with him Winston Churchill intervened and she was soon after released without charge.
Up until her death on January 10 1971 aged 87, Coco continued designing her products. Jacques Wetheimer then bought the Chanel empire and continued to tick the company over but didn’t really bring any huge success to the name instead choosing to persue his passion for horse breeding.  In 1974 Alain Wertheimer took over the company from his Father and built the company up by making its products more exclusive by greatly reducing the number of the brands outlets in the marketplace and by spending vast amounts of cash on advertising campaigns.
