Donna Karan’s story is one of passion for design being the daughter of a Mother who was a model. Donna Faske who was born in New York City in the USA in 1948 and a high school dropout in 1962 started selling clothing garments in a local boutique. Some 4 years later she attended design school with a dream of designing and marketing her own clothes. Donna took the Karan name when she married Mark Karan father to her daughter Gabrielle who is now known as Gabby. The marriage however didn’t last and ended in divorce in 1983 paving the way for Donna to marry her childhood love Stephan Weiss.
For a period of time Donna worked at Anne Klein designing sportswear which was affordable to the general public. Her work was very popular and led to her quickly becoming the associate designer in the company. With the help and support of her loving husband Stephan Weiss Donna went solo and launched her Donna Karan Collection label in 1985 and then her Donna Karan New York label in 1988. Her designs were new and fresh and focused heavily on being not only luxurious and easy to wear but also on flattering the wearer like no other designers clothes. Along with these labels she also launched the more price conscious DKNY label which concentrated firmly on jeans, cosmetics, fragrances and accessories.
Donna Karan now has retail outlets in all of the big cities of the world as well as nowadays offering the DKNY labels goods online. In April of 2001 however the Donna Karan International business was sold to the French Luxury goods company Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton for a reputed $643 million. Since then all DKNY and Donna Karan products have been produced in Italy but continue to offer the same design characteristics and style.
