Since their evolution in 1913, Prada started by Mario Prada, designed and distributed his brand by selling handbags, suitcases, trunks and shoes through two small boutiques in Milan and also had customers throughout the United States and Europe. After it became apparant that their manufactured suitcases from walrus skin proved unsuitable for air travel Mario Prada started streamlining his collection and designing more luxurious leather accessories along with waterproof handbags.
1978 saw Miuccia Prada (Mario's grandaughter) taking over the company. With an exeptional eye for fashion Miuccia took the company from strength to strength in the direction of haute couture. 1989 saw Prada propelled to the top of the fashion world with their pret-a-porter collection and the name of style, quality and individuality was back.
The 1990s saw Prada as one of the major leading forces in fashion. Their clothing and accessories were of the highest quality, sophisticated and smart. The simplicity and luxury of their fabrics with their colourings in mainly blacks, browns, greens, greys and creams became their signature look.
