About Christian Dior:

Christian Dior was born in a small coastal village called Grenville in France in 1905 where he remained with his family until they moved to Paris when he was five years old. Being artistic from a young age and always being interested in art Christian Dior opened an art gallery in Paris in 1928. It was in 1935 when Christian Dior took his first steps as a professional designer when after the sudden death of both his Brother and his Mother and close to financial ruin he began to sell his pencil sketched fashion designs.

During World War II Christian Dior served in the military but designing ladies fashion was never far from his thoughts and in 1941 he moved back to France and again began to establish himself in the world of fashion designs aided by fellow designer Lucien Lelong. However the designs were not met with favour by many of the governments of the day due to the lavish use of layers of expensive materials which they considered to be wasteful and over extravagant. However not to be deterred Christian continued and quickly found that his curvy feminine designs found favour with his customers who appreciated the extravagance especially after the wars dark and drab rationed clothing.

It was a sad day in 1957 when it was announced that Christian Dior had suffered a massive heart attack and had passed away. In particular his 1200 employees were plunged into turmoil and uncertainty about the company’s future. However Christian Dior’s assistant creative director Yves Saint Laurent took the leading hand in the company and designed a whole new collection in just nine weeks. The clothes were designed and produced just how Christian Dior would have liked them to have been, except the young Yves Saint Laurent used more usable and easier to wear fabrics which met great favour with the labels customers.

Under Yves Saint Laurent’s leadership the label went from strength to strength gaining a huge following of loyal and admiring customers. In 1960 however a Marc Bohan took over the top seat at Christian Dior and shocked the world when he released new lines using materials such as Mink and Alligator skins. It was only 5 years later that a young British designer by the name of John Galliano was given the job as head designer by the labels new owners Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy.
