It was in a small industrial town of Piacenza in Italy on the 11th of July 1934 that Giorgio Armani was born and continued to live with his parents, brother and sister into the 2nd World War. Indeed it was rumoured that he and a friend had burned themselves whilst playing with a flare which they had found in the locals streets around their homes. Giorgio Armani went on into military service himself during which time he dreamt of a career in Medicine.

In 1949 he and his family moved to Milan where for a time he studied medicine at Milan University and also devoted a lot of his time to another of his passions, photography. However his career in medicine was short lived as he gave up University after 2 years and instead took a job in a local store as a buyer and window dresser, a job he retained for some 7 years. This job gave him not only the inspiration to design but also the opportunity to learn about styles and materials due mainly to his frequent trips to the United Kingdom. Indeed he has been quoted as saying that many of his early designs were influenced by the British fashion of the time which he noted whilst he was in the UK.

In 1964 he finally took the plunge and took a job as a designer with Nino Cerutti designing for the Hitman label. However this was never going to be enough for Armani and hence it was only 6 years later after he had established his name that he split from Cerutti and set himself up as a freelance designer. Even this wasn’t enough for the ambitious Armani so 1974 witnessed Giorgio setting up his own designer label Giorgio Armani and introducing his collection to the public. This met with such a positive response that it was only one year later that he unveiled his first ladies wear collection into the marketplace.

Since then the label has rapidly expanded in popularity and wealth. The label divided into a number of sub-labels such as Giorgio Armani which is one of the most highly regarded designer labels in the market place as well as being one of the most expensive labels on the high street, and Emporio Armani which is aimed squarely at the 20’s and 30’s age group by producing hip and trendy clothing and accessories. Indeed Armani has used big names such as Megan Fox and Cristiano Ronaldo as the faces of Armani in its advertising campaigns.
